Sheep fence made of chestnut wood or Robinia?
We make our sheep fences from chestnut wood because this type of wood is very durable and maintenance-free. Chestnut wood naturally contains tannic acid, which protects the wood from moisture and mold. Our sheep fences are installed against chestnut posts, slightly above the grass, and therefore above ground level. This allows you to mow near the fence. The chestnut wood will naturally turn gray over time.
Besides the fact that this type of wood is very resistant to mold and moisture, this fencing has even more advantages.
This means you don't have to worry about the front or back of the fence, as sheep fencing doesn't have one. Fences do have a top and a bottom. The points should point upward. Installing sheep fencing: everything you need to know.
Installing a sheep fence is easy; start by driving the chestnut corner posts into the ground. Before installing the posts, it's a good idea to drill a hole with a ground auger and drive the post into it. Tip: Wood-on-wood splits, so it's best to hammer the post with a plastic mallet or a dampening material between the post and the mallet. Then, partially unroll the fence. Next, you need to install the first slat on the corner post. Do this by screwing the slat at each wire or by cleating the wire to the post. Then, at each subsequent post, you can properly extend and tighten the fence, after which you can secure it with cleats or screws. We recommend using stainless steel screws with a drill point.
